A door hanging crooked with a cable loose is not a door to keep using
When one side of the door drops, racks or jams, a cable has let go or a roller has left the track, and the whole weight is now on one side. Stop pressing the button. We reset, re-cable, rebalance and find out why it happened.
A sectional garage door runs on rollers in two vertical tracks that curve into horizontal tracks under the ceiling, and it's lifted by two cables that wind onto drums at the ends of the torsion shaft. The system works as long as both sides move together. The moment one cable goes slack, snaps or jumps its drum, or a roller pops out of a track, the door racks: one side drops, the other stays up, the door jams against the track and the panels twist. Keep running the opener and the panels bend, the hinges tear, and the door can come down on whatever is under it.
The causes are a short list. A cable snapped, usually at the bottom bracket where Florida humidity and sprinkler overspray rust it from the inside out, or because a broken spring on the other side threw the balance off. A cable jumped the drum because the door was stopped on something, a trash can or a bike, and the cable went slack long enough to unwind. A roller came out because the track was bent, the roller's stem wore, or something hit the door; in a county with this many golf carts and this many bumpers backed into doors, impact is the usual story. Or a track pulled off the jamb because the lag bolts worked loose over twenty years of cycles.
The repair starts with making the door safe, which usually means clamping it where it hangs and releasing the spring tension in a controlled way so the door can be straightened without anyone under it. Then the technician re-seats the rollers, straightens or replaces the bent track section, replaces the cables as a pair with new bottom brackets if the old ones are rusted, re-winds the drums evenly, re-tensions the springs so the door balances by hand, and runs it through the opener with the force settings reset. If the panels bent, we'll say which ones and whether a section is available. If the door is a 1990s model that's twisted beyond a straight close, we price a new door alongside the repair rather than sending a bill for a door that will rack again.
What's included
Secured before anything
The door is clamped and the spring tension released in a controlled way so nothing drops while it's straightened.
Rollers and track
Rollers re-seated or replaced with nylon, bent track straightened or sections replaced, lag bolts reset into solid wood.
Cables, drums, brackets
Lift cables replaced as a pair, bottom brackets replaced when rusted, drums rewound evenly.
The cause found
A broken spring, a rusted cable, an obstruction or an impact; fixing the symptom alone means another call.
Rebalanced and reset
Springs re-tensioned so the door lifts evenly by hand, opener force and travel reset, safety reverse tested.
Honest on bent panels
Which sections bent, whether a replacement exists, and when a new door is the cheaper answer.

Questions we get about off-track & cable repair
Can I push the door back into the track myself?
Please don't. The door's weight is on one side, the springs are still tensioned, and a door that's been racked can drop suddenly when it frees up. It's a two-person job with clamps, and the cables need rewinding evenly afterward or it will rack again.
Why did the cable snap?
Rust, almost always, at the bottom where it loops through the bracket and where the sprinklers or a wet floor reach it. A broken spring can also overload the other side's cable. We replace cables as a pair and check the springs.
The door is crooked but still moves. Is it urgent?
Yes. Each cycle bends the panels and the track a little more, and the door can jam and fall. Stop using it and call; it's a same-day repair.
Will the bent panel straighten out?
Light bends sometimes. A creased panel won't, and a creased bottom section won't seal. We'll tell you whether a replacement section exists for your door, and the price against a new door.
Does homeowners insurance cover a car hitting the door?
Often, under the home policy or the auto policy's property damage, less the deductible. We photograph the damage and give you a written estimate for the claim.
How do I keep it from happening again?
Keep the floor under the door clear, don't stop the door partway, keep the sprinklers off the door, and have the cables and rollers looked at in an annual tune-up.
