Emergency garage door repair

Stuck open, stuck shut, or hanging by one cable: the calls that can't wait

A garage door stuck open is an unlocked house. A door stuck shut with the car inside is a missed shift. A door hanging crooked is a 200-pound guillotine. These go to the front of the line, seven days a week.

Some garage door problems can wait for a convenient Tuesday. These can't: the door is stuck open and the house can't be secured for the night; the door is stuck shut with a car inside and someone has to be at work; a spring has snapped and the door is too heavy to lift safely; the door is off its track or hanging crooked with a cable loose and might come down on its own; or a storm is a day out and the door won't close. Tell the phone team it's an emergency and the next available technician is dispatched to you, including evenings and weekends.

While you wait, the safe moves are simple. Don't try to lift or force a door with a broken spring; a two-car steel door weighs 150 to 250 pounds without its springs helping. Don't pull the red emergency-release cord while the door is open with a broken spring, because the door will drop. Keep people, pets and vehicles out from under the door. If the door is stuck open and you have to leave, close the door into the house from the garage and lock it; the garage can't be secured, but the house can. And if the opener is dead after a storm and the door is closed, the release cord is safe to pull on a door with intact springs: pull it, lift the door by hand, and it should stay up on its own if it's balanced.

On arrival the technician makes the door safe first, then diagnoses and prices the repair before doing it, the same as any other visit. Most emergencies are a spring, a cable or a roller, all of which ride on the truck, so the door is usually working again in the same visit. A surge-killed opener after a lightning storm is the other common one, and the quickest honest fix is sometimes a new opener with battery backup rather than a board that may be weeks out.

Hurricane season adds its own version. In the two days before a storm the calls are doors that won't close and doors the owner wants braced; after it, doors that were pushed in, openers that died in the outage, and garages full of water with rusted bottom brackets a month later. We prioritize closing and securing doors before a storm and clearing stuck doors after one, and we tell you plainly if a door is damaged beyond a safe repair.

Questions we get about emergency garage door repair

What counts as an emergency?

A car stuck inside, a door stuck open, a broken spring you need lifted today, a door hanging crooked or off its track, or a door that won't close with a storm coming. If it isn't one of those, a same-day visit at the normal price is usually just as fast.

Can I pull the red cord to get my car out?

Only if the springs are intact. With a broken spring, pulling the release leaves you holding a 200-pound door, and if the door is open it will drop. Call first; we can usually have you out within hours.

Do you come out at night?

Yes, with a stated after-hours fee you hear before we dispatch. Many stuck-shut calls that come in at 10 p.m. are better served by first thing in the morning at the normal price, and we'll tell you if that's the case.

The door is stuck open and I'm leaving. What do I do?

Lock the door from the garage into the house, move anything valuable inside, and call us. If the opener is dead but the springs are fine, pulling the release and closing the door by hand is safe; lock it with the manual slide lock if it has one.

A storm is coming and the door won't close. Can you help today?

That's exactly the call we prioritize in the days before a hurricane. A door left open in a storm lets wind into the house; closing and securing it is worth more than any other prep.

What if the door is too damaged to fix?

The technician will say so, secure the opening, and give you a written estimate for a new door. A temporary brace or plywood close-up keeps the house secure in the meantime.
